National Police Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2024 - 2026

Welcome to the first-ever National Police Health and Wellbeing Strategy for policing across England and Wales. This practical, evidence-based strategy provides clear guidance to help police forces build strong wellbeing support for everyone who works in policing.

Why have we created this strategy?

Your health and wellbeing matters. It’s vital for you, your families, and the communities you serve.

Developed by Professor John Harrison (Chief Medical Officer for Policing) and Andy Rhodes (Service Director, National Police Wellbeing Service), this strategy helps forces provide the best possible support so officers, staff, volunteers, and their families can thrive both professionally and personally.

What's in it?

The strategy sets out an action-oriented wellbeing model built around five key areas:

  • Join Well – Starting your career with the right wellbeing support
  • Train Well – Building resilience and understanding wellbeing throughout your training
  • Work Well – Providing ongoing support throughout your career
  • Live Well – Ensuring your wellbeing is supported outside work too
  • Leave Well – Helping you prepare for retirement or career transition

It clearly identifies the issues forces need to tackle and provides an evidence-based framework for doing so.

Who is the strategy for?

This strategy is for everyone in policing, at every level. It supports Chief Officers, Wellbeing Leads, Occupational Health teams, and every officer and staff member.

It’s designed to help forces create healthy workplaces that are inclusive, supportive, and actively promote wellbeing.

How will the strategy be delivered?

Each force will use this national strategy to create their own local wellbeing plans that fit their specific needs and circumstances. This strategy is supported by a suite of resources from Oscar Kilo and the NPWS, including:
