Chris Birkenshaw has been a police officer with West Yorkshire Police for 17 years, working in a variety of areas including neighbourhood, public protection and CID.
Chris has witnessed the increasing demands on policing and the impact this has had on the welfare of officers and staff. He has also seen an increase in the work taking place to improve the mental health and wellbeing of these individuals and supports the work of the National Police Wellbeing Service.
“Having struggled with mental health myself for years, I tried to cope with it alone in fear that work would not being understanding and just tell me to ‘Man up!’.Chris Birkenshaw
“After having a breakdown, I received counselling and support which has really helped me on my road to recovery. Too many people suffer in silence and need to speak out before it gets too much.
“Since my breakdown I have taken up running which keeps me physically fit whilst having a massive impact on my mental wellbeing.”
Chris, who has raised money for various charities including MIND, is running the London Marathon this year for ‘Children First International’. He will continue to campaign and raise awareness to prevent too many lives been taken too soon.
If anyone would like to make a donation to Chris’s chosen charity they can do so here www.wonderful.org and type in Birky London Marathon 2020.
